These are PM's own published criteria for becoming a Certified Licensed Applicator. It is a contractor qualification, not a training seminar certificate.

The five-year experience floor is the one worth pausing on. Roof coatings are an easy product to sell and a hard product to install correctly, and the barrier to entry for a coating outfit is a pressure washer and a spray rig. A manufacturer that is going to carry a twenty-year watertight obligation on a building it has never seen has a strong incentive to be selective about who applies it. The certification exists to protect the manufacturer's exposure. As a building owner, you get to ride along on that diligence.

What a manufacturer warranty changes
The obligation outlives the contractor
A workmanship warranty is only as good as the company behind it. A manufacturer warranty is an obligation of a materials company with a national book of business. On a fifteen or twenty year term, that distinction is the entire value of the paper.
A second party inspects our work
PM technical personnel inspect the completed installation and issue an inspection report to the owner. Non-compliant work is repaired or replaced before a warranty is issued. That is an actual gate, and it is the reason a warranted system is a different product from "we applied a coating."
The specification is published
PM writes recommended design specifications by substrate — EPDM, single-ply, modified bitumen, concrete, sprayed foam, metal — with primer selection, repair detailing, and film thickness tied to warranty term. Thickness is not negotiable downward
Because the warranty term is tied to cured mils, the material quantity on your roof is set by the term you bought. It is verifiable during application with a wet film gauge. That converts the most commonly shorted line item in coating work into something measurable.
The mechanism
Warranty term is bought in mils
This is the sentence most coating bids in this market do not contain. The length of a Progressive Materials warranty is a direct function of how much cured silicone ends up on the roof.
PM's general silicone restoration guidance is 20 dry mils for a 5-year warranty, increasing 5 mils for every additional 5 years of term. The fully reinforced system specification carries its own minimums over a reinforced base coat — 15 mils at 5 years, 20 at 10, 25 at 15, 30 at 20. Different systems, different numbers, and the system written for your roof is the one that governs.
The takeaway is not the specific figure. It is that a legitimate proposal states one. If a bidder offers you "a 20-year warranty" and the scope does not say how thick the coating will be, there is nothing in that document you could ever enforce.

Coating warranties are bought in mils. The dry film thickness is what determines how long the system lasts, and it is the number that separates a real specification from a price for paint — so here is ours, in public, before you ask for it.

Two things follow from publishing this.
First, it makes bids comparable. A competing quote at a lower price is not cheaper if it is thinner — it is a shorter roof sold at a lower number. Ask any bidder for the dry film thickness in writing. If they will not put it on the proposal, you have learned something useful.
Second, in California it is a code question, not a preference.The Energy Code requires a liquid-applied coating on a low-slope roof to be applied across the entire roof at the manufacturer's recommended dry film thickness. That makes the mil spec enforceable rather than aspirational, and it means an under-applied roof is a compliance problem as well as a durability one.
Actual specification is written to the individual roof and the system selected for it — substrate, condition, slope, drainage, and ponding all factor in. The figures above are what we apply for these warranty terms; your proposal will name the specific system and thickness for your building.

- Who issues the warranty — you, or the manufacturer? Ask for a sample copy before you sign anything.

- What does the warranty actually cover — material only, or labor and material? Is there a dollar limit?

- What are the maintenance conditions that keep the warranty in force, and what voids it?
- What substrate preparation and primer does the manufacturer specify for my membrane, and did you adhesion test it?
- Is the warranty transferable if I sell the building?
A contractor who answers all eight without hedging is worth taking seriously regardless of whose logo is on the bucket. A contractor who cannot answer the first three is quoting a price for paint.

Questions about the certification and the warranty
What is a Certified Licensed Applicator?
It is Progressive Materials’ contractor certification. PM requires a minimum of five years of roofing experience, a strong understanding of roofing applications, adequate financial stability, strong customer referrals, and a strong commitment to the roofing industry. The part that matters to a building owner is the consequence: Progressive Materials states that warranties are only available to Certified Licensed Applicators. A contractor without the certification can buy and apply the material. They cannot get you the manufacturer warranty.
Who actually issues the warranty?
Progressive Materials does. That is the whole point. A contractor warranty is worth exactly what the contractor is worth in year nine, and roofing has a lot of companies that do not make it that far. A manufacturer warranty is an obligation of the manufacturer, obtained through a certified applicator, and it does not evaporate if your contractor changes phone numbers. We also carry our own workmanship warranty on top of it.
How long are Progressive Materials warranties?
PM publishes a Full System Watertight Warranty and a Silicone Roof Coating Restoration Watertight Warranty Program, with terms ranging from 5 to 20 years. Which term you can buy is not a menu choice made in the office — it is a function of the cured film thickness that goes on the roof and of the condition of the substrate underneath it.

It means there is a second party with money at risk looking at our workmanship, which is not something a contractor-issued warranty can offer at any price.
